LH quarter panel removal
Posted July 19th, 2006 by szaAnother late start after work, so I only got a little more of the quarter panel cut/despotwelded before i had to stop for the night. I'm trying not to piss off my neighbors by stopping air hammer use by 8-9pm every night. So far there aren't any burning effigies or anything.
All of the shiny circles and little holes are spotwelds, which have to be individually drilled out and pryed apart. Not exactly hard work, but extremely time consuming and tedious.
Digging into the rust
Posted July 18th, 2006 by szaAfter making a rough estimate of the panels I'd need, I placed a will-call order with Classic Industries, and took the morning off of work to drive up to LA and pick up the following panels:
- Roof
- LH and RH full quarter panels
- LH outer wheelhousing
- LH rear trunk filler panel
- Rear center filler panel (between the trunk and rear window)
Total bill was around $1200, which is surprisingly cheap for the quality (and quantity) of panels. Things have come a long way since the crappy Chinese panels of the 80's and 90's.
Paint and bondo removal
Posted July 15th, 2006 by szaAfter letting it sit for nearly a year, I finally decided to get back to work on the car. I started by stripping the "paint" from the quarter panels, roof, and rear panel, using a combination of aircraft stripper, putty knives, and roloc wheels.
